ABOUT

  • In the middle Ages it was called the Island of Rabbits (Nyulak szigete) because it functioned as a royal hunting reserve.

  • In the 13th century, King Bela IV founded a nunnery on the island after the Mongol Invasion. The king made a vow to sent her daughter, Princess Margaret to a Dominican nunnery if he could rebuild the country devastated by the Mongols. The Mongols had to suddenly return to their homeland so King Bela had a chance to reorganize and rebuild the country. Faithful to his vow, Bela sent the 11-year old Margaret to the convent. Since then the island has bore her name, Margaret Island.

  • Margaret Island was declared a public park in 1908.

Shoes on the Danube P. M.

Worth To See

ABOUT

  • ‘Shoes on the Danube Promenade’ is the sculpture of 60 pairs of shoes serves as a memorial and a monument to the Hungarian Jews who, in the winter of 1944-1945, were shot on the banks of the Danube River by the members of the Arrow Cross Party.

  • During this time, Jews in Budapest were often rounded up on the banks of the Danube before being shot into the water which would then carry them away. Even more harrowingly, they were regularly forced to remove their shoes as these were a valuable commodity during the war; their murderers would then sell them or use them themselves.

  • They were sculpted by Gyula Pauer in 2005.
